florida. >> it's exactly what you would expect, when a powerful arctic front drops into the heat and humidity down in south. this is what folks in edgewater, florida, came face-to-face with. the funnel cloud in their windshield there. barely touched down for about 30 seconds. it is unconfirmed that it was a tornado. it sure looks like one right there. about 70 miles away, this just off in the distance there. about 105-mile-per-hour winds there. 150 properties damaged. and one car wash that we were able to tell in the damage report, completely destroyed the building, that was destroyed out of that. at least 13 tornadoes touched down with this powerful blast, all the way through the deep south. look at these around little rock, birmingham, just south of the birmingham area, in jackson there. 13 tornadoes, 46 storm reports from this. this is the arctic front, that southern part of it that brought snow, by the way, all the way from minneapolis, well to dallas. when you look at the pictures we were getting yesterday, you can

see the snow's kind of the tires trying to spin. and that snow is more than a foot deep, from wisconsin to minnesota. twitter pictures, coming out of dallas with their first hit of snow for the season. dallas has had more snow this season than chicago, from this arctic blast because they were completely left out of it. we'll watch what happens today. most of that severe weather has moved into the tip of florida and will go through that, so you know what to expect when we come back in regular weather. let's turn to josh elliott for the news of the day. >> we're going to begin with the breaking news out of south africa, concerning human rights icon nelson mandela. doctors just announced why the former president of south africa is in the hospital. bazi kanani joins us from pretoria, south africa. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, josh. nelson mandela is being treated for a lung infection here in the capital city of pretoria.

that's a serious condition for a man of his age. even though his health has been declining recent years, he was well enough this summer to receive visitors at his home, including the clinton family. mandela has been treated for a lung infection before. this is his fourth day in the hospital. his longest hospitalization in the past several years. doctors say he is responding to treatment. there's no reason to panic. they're also asking south africans to keep their revered leader in their prayers. josh? >> bazi kanani in south africa. here at home, a medical helicopter has crashed west of chicago, killing two nurses and a pilot flying to a nearby hospital. the chopper crashed in a field near rochelle. no word why it crashed. major, new concerns about the war in afghanistan this morning. u.s. troops are set to withdraw in a matter of months. but a new pentagon report finds only 1 of afghanistan's 23 army brigades is prepared to take

over the duties. we're learning more about the navy s.e.a.l. killed while helping to rescue a doctor in afghanistan. nicholas checque had been a s.e.a.l. for most of the past decade. people in his hometown in pennsylvania said checque dreamed of being a s.e.a.l., entering the navy right out of high school. and in florida, a woman has been convicted of killing a man who won the lottery so she could steal his money. a judge in tampa called dee dee moore cold and swindling before killing abraham shakespeare. two, major headlines returning your taxpayer money. the government is selling off its remaining stake in aig, the insurance company that got the biggest bailout in the financial crisis. a slight profit is expected. and hsbc is expected to pay the government $1.9 million to settle accusations that the bank helped launder money for mexican

drug cartels and for officials in iran. and take a look at this. massive fireball that you'll see there, streaking across the sky over houston. unfortunately, it was not a ufo. simply a meteor that people saw before dawn, driving. very unfortunate. it was so bright, a camera caught it 500 miles away. had it been a ufo, obviously, a life-changer. and it was supposed to be the game of the year between new england and houston last night. wasn't even close. even when things didn't go as planned, as you see here, well, the patriots took advantage, fumbling into the end zone. why not? tom brady and the patriots steamrolling the houston, texans. the new daddy threw for four scores. and right now, there's no doubt about who the kings of the hill are in the nfl. >> josh, thanks very much. we're going to turn to the brazen shooting in midday, midtown manhattan, just steps

away from carnegie hall. a young man executed. one bullet to the back of the head in a mob-style hit. this was calm and cold-blooded. >> reporter: this crime was carefully planned. an execution-style shooting on a busy sidewalk, just during lunchtime, with a getaway car waiting. this morning, police are trying to figure out how the shooter could have just vanished. abc news has learned police are reviewing security camera footage as they try to figure out who gunned down this man, 31-year-old brandon lincoln woodard, a law student from los angeles, seen here in a facebook pho photo. >> there was blood from his mouth to his face. >> i seen him drop to the floor. >> reporter: police say the cold and calculated attack happened just after 2:00 monday afternoon, in this bustling area, right in front of a school. investigators believe the gunman lay in wait for at least 40

minutes. woodard checked out of a posh new york city hotel, the shooter followed. witnesses say the victim looked at his phone and turned back instinctively, but kept going. that's when police say the shooter raised a semiautomatic pistol and shot woodard once in the back of the head. >> one, lout shot. we all flinched. >> reporter: witnesses say the shooter got into a silver-colored lincoln sedan with a getaway driver and took off. authorities called it a bold assassination. >> absolutely gone. nowhere to be found. >> reporter: that he vanished was made harder to believe, because he was in an area crowded with tourists and surveillance cameras. >> the sheer fact he shot him in the back of the head, tells me this was planned and directed. >> reporter: the friends and family are shocked. he attended prep school. and had ties to the hip-hop

industry. >> kind heart. smart. really good person. >> reporter: but sources tell abc news, woodard had some run-ins with police. he reportedly was expected in court january 22nd in beverly hills, on a felony cocaine possession charge, according to authorities. and sources tell abc news, woodard was in town on vacation. police are looking into all areas of his life, including who would have known his schedule. but right now, they remain baffled as to what would have prompted this shooting. >> this person lied in wait. >> frightening stuff. now, to the latest on the death of musical superstar jenni rivera. she was killed in a plane crash that right now has no apparent cause. a team of investigators is on the case, rushing to find out why her lear jet went down. jim avila has been tracking the latest in washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, amy. the loss of this homegrown superstar, beloved on both sides of the border, is under investigation by u.s. and mexican officials.

under scrutiny, the maintenance of the plane and the medical record of a pilot in his late 70s. mexican-american superstar jenni rivera may be lost. her twin-engine lear jet, spread over a 1,000-foot debris field. but overnight, her family refused to give up on a miracle. >> we have no confirmation of her body being recovered. we are strong. and we'll continue to stay strong. >> reporter: still, the news from investigators is not encouraging. reports of a rapid lost of altitu altitude, just outside monterrey, mexico, where the mexican-american superstar had performed the night before the crash. now, we're learning that the small twin-engine lear jet was old. it was a 43-year-old jet. and one of the two pilots was 78. both of those factors will be investigated by mexican authorities, aided by the american national transportation

safety board. >> there's no age limit for pilots. >> reporter: as for the plane, it had one serious crash in 2005. a different pilot ran off the runway, during landing at amaril amarillo, texas. the ntsb blamed the pilot for losing control. >> if there was a problem back in 2005, it would wait this long to manifest itself. >> reporter: mexican authorities say it will take up to ten days for the initial result of the investigation to be known, leaving behind a grieving but still hopeful family. and fans. >> she was more than just a song writer and a singer and a very famous singer. she was a personality. >> reporter: mexican officials are hoping to find a black box in the wreckage that would have recorded any mechanical issue and/or a voice recorder that could have captured the last moments in the cockpit. george? >> jim, thanks. we have the latest on the royal hoax that ended in a tragic suicide. the australian deejays behind it

are sick with remorse. their show has been canceled. and more serious legal consequences may be coming next. cecilia vega is covering it from sydney. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: media here, are saying that the nurse who answered that phony phone call did not tell her family about it, before she died in an apparent suicide. now, they're left wondering how a joke could have ended like this. the fallout over that australian radio prank gone so wrong continued overnight, after days of suspended advertising. the radio station, at the center of a global firestorm, announced it will resume airing commercials on thursday. but that all profits will go directly to the family of the unsuspecting nurse at the center of that joke. >> hello there. could i please speak to kate, please, my granddaughter? >> yes. just hold on, ma'am. >> reporter: the deejays who made that call to prince edward vii hospital learned their show has been canceled.

bludgeoned his mother to death in the family's michigan garage in may of 2011. they claim he was fueled by pent-up rage after years of abuse at the hands of a mentally ill mother. who spent time in jail for abusing him. troubling for the defense, the dramatic blisters on jeffrey pyne's hands. disturbing photos that jurors have seen over and over again. pyne maintains he got the blisters throwing a wooden pallet at his job. freeman spoke of jeffrey's fear for his 12-year-old sister being alone in the house with his mother. a fear she shared with jeffrey. >> i did not think it was a good idea for julia to ever be alone with ruth in the house. >> reporter: defense attorneys maintain jeffrey was not involved in any way with his mother's murder. claiming a stranger or strangers likely attacked ruth pyne on that may day in 2011.

for "good morning america," john muller, abc news, new york. >> okay. let's get more from our legal team, nancy grace, dan abrams, our legal analyst. dan, let me begin with you. the ex-girlfriend, a prosecution witness. and establishes grounds for a motive. and can create sympathy for the defense. >> she is doing what the prosecution wanted, which is to lay the groundwork for their motive, which is this is a mother who is out of control, who is slowly descending. that she's off her medication. that he had been worried about it. he had been talking about it. but you're right. on the other hand, it provides something. if the jurors don't want to convict here, and they want to sort of think to themselves, i don't believe that reason -- i believe they have not proven their case beyond a reasonable doubt, this will be one of the things in the back of their minds when they say to themselves, i don't know if i want to convict this guy. >> nancy, in the end, was she an

effective witness for the prosecution? >> well, here's the deal. it's six of one, half-dozen of another. several of the witnesses we heard from this week and the last 24 hours, have really hurt the state. and the irony is, the state brought them on. number one, the girlfriend you're talking about. she was a witness for the state. but the reality is, i think she'd help the defense by describing the home life. not only that, she described how ruth pyne, the deceased, was hoarding an arsenal of lives in her headboard, behind her in her bed. that she had gone off the deep end, was watching the religious televangelists 24/7. walking around the house with a bible. was angry because her 22-year-old son was having sex with his girlfriend. everything was going haywire in the home. and we find out the dad, and the state's bringing this on, gentlem gentlemen, that the father,

bernie pyne, is having an affair, behind his wife's back. he's lying to his wife and the girlfriend, saying the wife is in a catatonic state. now, we're seeing motive by the husband, too. and i'm very, very surprised they brought in evidence by the girlfriend, the boy, the defendant, had lied to her. he was cheating on the girlfriend. that's bad reputation evidence. that's reversible error. what were they thinking? >> how far does the judge go to tell the jury to disregard all of the extraneous? >> judges, all the time, tell -- they do. nancy's right to be laughing. they do tell jurors all the time. disregard this particular piece of evidence. but the truth is, they heard it. >> best not to tell the jury because if you tell the jury, don't listen to that, then they really listen to it. >> yeah. and that's always a real challenge. and does become an issue later on, in appeal.

we talked a lot about this case about the possibility. nancy used the word jury nullification. that the jurors may ignore the judge's instructions here and find them simply not guilty. i think there's a way for them to say, within the judge's instructions, i don't believe they've proven this case beyond a reasonable doubt. yes, i believe there's questions. yes, i believe there's a lot of evidence that sure looks like he did it. but i think these jurors -- >> no dna. >> i think the jurors, it's the hands and the alibi, that are the key pieces of evidence here. and i think the jurors could come to the conclusion, that's not proven beyond a reasonable doubt. >> we only have 30 seconds. you think they have a strong position? >> i think it boils down to the little girl left in the home. and the jury is going to think that little girl, just 12 years old now, was going to be brutalized by this mom. and they're going to let him walk. they're going to think he's a hero. >> nancy, dan, thank you very much. let's get the weather from sam. >> good morning.

feels like i got hit by a car. a few days later, showing this photo of her neck, saying, healing. >> her wound will continue to look better and better. and most likely, it will be inperceptible a year from now. >> reporter: the mother of four is going to bed at the same time as her kids. just put my babies to bed. and i'm right behind them. she only revealed her diagnosis, six weeks ago. >> i went for a regular physical. and that's how i discovered this. >> reporter: and even documented her fears about sharing the news with her children. writing about her 4-year-old son's reaction. saying, he laid in bed and said, i don't want mommy to die. that's the stuff that breaks my heart. also confiding, i'm not afraid anymore. i'm ready to put this behind me. less than a week after her surgery, burke-charvet appears to be in good spirits. thanking her twitter followers online, for all of their support. including members of her "dancing with the stars" family, like cheryl burke.

we're here to tell you about a story we were telling you about a minute ago. renting puppies. a utah college student has come up with this idea. she says it's to help shine a light on the plight of rescue dogs, like these cuties right here. but not all animal experts are sold on it. here's abc's abbie boudreau. >> reporter: meet toast, and his rambunctious buddy, charly. these puppies are temporary best friends. it's a new way of fulfilling the animal fix, with no strings or messy house attached. you can rent toast or charly for a few hours. how much would it cost to rent toast for two hours? >> $25 for two hours. >> reporter: jenna is a 20-year-old college student at byu in utah. between her classes, she rents out puppies who have been abandoned. >> we're not allowed to have pets in housing. a lot of people miss the animal interaction. so, that's what i wanted to help solve. >> reporter: now, pups for rent is filling a void for dozens of students and family.

some people think that's not such a good idea. >> i know. i can see how there's concerns surrounding that. but our goal is to place puppies in good homes. we're taking puppies that would be sitting in the cage in the pound. >> reporter: but not everyone agrees. bill berloni says renting puppies is a step in the wrong direction. >> it reduces them back to things. back to things that we use for our leisure. and if the human in its life keeps changing, they'll have a problem of learning how to attach. they'll become too independent. and be harder to train. >> reporter: "gma" tagged along to see what renting a puppy entails. adorable toast was being rented by a family for an hour. >> we have a waiver. basically, you are responsible for the puppy. >> all of our babies thought it would be fun to get together and play puppies. >> reporter: it seems like all of the perks and none of the responsibility. >> it would be better to adopt them. but when that's not an option, i don't think we should be deprived of animal interaction. >> reporter: summer jones rented douglas four weeks ago.

and now, douglas is an unexpected but proud member of the jones family. >> my mom had been resistant about getting a dog. when you see the puppy in person, you can't help but fall in love with it. >> reporter: for miller, all of the 11 puppies she's rented have now been adopted, making it all worth it. >> people who thought maybe they'd never have a dog, they rent a puppy. they feel the positive benefits of pets and say, i need a dog. >> reporter: for "good morning america," abbie boudreau, abc news, salt lake city. >> get a close-up on nunu and alexander making out. they've been making out the whole piece. that is the goal, to get them adopted. these two guys, a guy and girl from the new york humane society. so many dogs in shelters who need full-time homes. and you can adopt these guys right here. i think you have to adopt them as a pair, though. >> yeah, you do. let's go to sam and the weather. >> we're out here in times square. good morning, everybody. happy -- wait. it's your birthday? >> yeah. >> tell me your name. >> nancy lungren.
